I have been using a plugin for Max called PSD Manager, and one of the great benefits is that it creates alphas or even PSD file layers for individual objects or sets of objects. The great thing about this is you get really useable masks for for objects that include depth of field and anti-aliasing etc.

I know we get the MATID and OBJID channels in the MXI now, but there is no way to actually extract those as masks very nicely. You always lose some of the edges. The alpha works great, but you can't do it per-object.

So: would it be possible to add some more render elements/passes that can make actual alphas or generate a non-transparent layer for individual objects/materials and thus get perfect mask for post work?

This is an awesome idea, even with a option to have it embedded or separate. +1

Cheers

You can use "Render selected" to make the alpha for a specific object or group of objects, but I guess you want to get one alpha for each object in one render at the same time, right?

It would be nice too to get a fast alpha without having to render the main pass.

Thanks Fernando. Could go that route, but yes: the idea would be to get the passes at the same time. Otherwise the time and hassle is more prohibitive, especially with a lot of objects.

I still want this feature as well, but this may help you in the meantime:
