Since the update to 2.5 the thumbnails from newly created materials are not visible. Only the purple logo of the material editor shows.

How to solve this?

Firstly, have you rebooted the machine since installing Maxwell 2.5? In theory, a copy of the old thumbnail reader could still be in memory. If you have rebooted, and the issue persists, you may try these steps (this assumes you're using 64-bit Maxwell; if 32-bit, the name of the thumbnail plugin will be maxwell.shell_x86.dll):

1. Start > Search > type cmd.exe
2. right-click cmd.exe and Run as Administrator
3. navigate to your Maxwell directory
4. type regsvr32 maxwell.shell_x64.dll and hit Enter
5. a dialog should indicate that registration was successful

Here, I did not need to do any of this; I used the Maxwell 2.5 patch installer, and it successfully registered the MXM thumbnail plugin.

This should fix the problem; For more, check this thread - Maxwell Fire (starting in the middle of the page):

I have a similar issue but with a little twist. I've never been able to preview .mxm thumbnails in Windows Explorer, with either MW 2.1 or 2.5. I registered the .dll but no change.

Yes, I rebooted. I was using Maxwell 2.1 for several months before that and never had the previews either. So far I've just been working around it. I'll probably try a complete uninstall and reinstall tonight or tomorrow. It's busy rendering right now, probably until late tonight.

I had to right click an MXM and choose "open with" and then point it to mxed.exe (so you gotta manually re-associate your mxms to open with the maxwell material editor.. as i believe THAT (mxed.exe) is what really creates the thumbnails) and THEN it finally updated my thumbnails.

Yes, I found that I had to re-associate the files with the material editor too. Still didn't work. I'm wondering if it's because I didn't remove my trial version and reinstall after making my purchase. Just guessing here.

Have the same problem here. No more previews in explorer since 2.5.

The command mentioned above doesn't work (I get an error message) and the association with mxed is already existing.

I'm on Windows 7 Prof. 32bit here.

If you are on a 32-bit machine, you need to use this dll instead: maxwell.shell_x86.dll

Best,
Jason.

that didn't help - now even the .mxs and .mxi grey Maxwell icons are gone and just blank icon there...

Re-associate them by right clicking and select "open with" -- choose MXED and make sure "always use this" is checked... then restart the machine.

Best,
Jason.

reassigning didn't work here.
mxs and mxi icons are back. .mxm icons never changed... they are still the purple icons and not thumbnails.

What does it say, exactly?

JD, Half Life already pointed out that using a WIN 32bit the command is different so I used the comand he provided.
That work ed in parts - the icons for .mxs and .mxi were gone and replaced by a blank icon.
The .mxm icons were not touched and remained purple maxwell icons.

reassigning the tags for .mxs and .mxi via 'open with' worked to have the icons back, but nothing changed for .mxm icons. That's a pity as this was working with Vista. I just have this problem since formatting+installing Win 7.
