That´s cool, can you tell us how´s the viewport navigation in this scene, heavy and slow or lightweight?

Cheers

lightweight, as in nothing. voxelisation takes a hit, and this scene used about 1.5 gig of ram for the grass.

Still scratching the surface of what could be done, with very considered maps, you could do a much richer scene. But its a learning curve like anything.
I think most of the time a preset lawn will be ok, rather than making bespoke maps. However it would be interesting to try making maps from real ground photos, to find an automated workflow to create density maps etc. mimicing a photographed lawn.

I hope 'soon' doesn't mean 'for SIGGRAPH 2012,' that would be a long while to wait for the Maya 2013 plugin.

Yeah, as I said before, why not release a Maya 2013 version of the existing Maxwell 2.6?

I hope they do not wait until July 2nd (2.7), which is one day after Spain will become a new european football champion... :-)

That would be a logical date and time to release the new beast. Since the promo offers are running now they pull in as many new users as possible and then give them something fresh and new to play with. It would make sense.

it would make even more sense when they aim for new customers with the promo and after that release a brand new 3.0 for which you would have to pay again... from an economical point that would make more sense :D

Well, not yet :)

For Softimage though, I saw there is an ICE compound for creating grass using strands, which would be rendered using the hair primitive, but with 2.7 also the grass primitives could be used for rendering, so that could be a solution until the grass generator is ported to SI.
