Sorry about that.
(new file uploaded now without walls)

The walls are no longer used, but it is important to make sure the texture path for the MXI sky-options is correct in all four channels.

Many thanks to everyone here for the comments and suggestions (including raja and Richard). They are taken into consideration.

It is easy to add elements and convolute the design ... the most difficult is to keep the simplicity while adding functionality and still maintain minimalism.

It will take time and evolve slowly, but I am still curious what other people would come up with if you were to do it over and design a universal object of this nature.

A note for all the Mac users (don't know about PCs, might be different):

The first time you open the scene, go the Sky options and set the MXI to
the enclosed SphericalPanorama.mxi. Then save the scene.

Otherwise the MXI isn't found at the saved path (path handling in M~R is
still weak), and so the environment is ignored. Thomas, could you
possibly to this in the source scene?

Personally I would also suggest to enable MXI output and the Multilight
option, as this allows variations for the light later, which can be very
useful when designing SS materials.

Hope it helps

Kabe

This is a known problem in all platforms.

??? the source scene already has a path set.

I don´t use Studio just the plugin for C4D and the material editor...
So the MXI file is not good for me to present some materials...
If the object in 3ds or c4d ... in that case i think will be very usefully

Thanks

Hello Goncalo,

I can understand the need to have this scene in any 3d file format but this would require a good deal of work. It would require a lot of effort to work backwards to recreate this scene with all of the exposure adjustments and other calibrations that Thomas made to the scene so that it could be replicated in a host software specific file format.

I would not recommend it and I am sure, Thomas will not provide as the perfect place for this scene is Studio.

I thought we were alll in the same ship, sailing in the same direction but... i don´t want to be bad understood

If I resave the scene, actually just the name is set here, with no path at all.

Hi all,

A new experimental version (06-31) of the scene is now available for testing (for anyone interested).
->DOWNLOAD<-

Changes:
  • The ribbon emitter is now made thinner than before (if this doesn't work well in the long run, then the next step would be to make it recessed (so as to produce more focused rays)
  • An emitter indicator is added on the front (above the Maxwell letters)
When the ribbon emitter is ON then the indicator is a circle
    Image
When the bulb emitter is ON the the indicator is a dot
When both emitters are on then it is both a circle and a dot
    Image
When no emitters are ON then there is no indicator.
  • The instruction PDF is now included in the download (instead of being a seperate file).

Thomas,
this is very good work. Thanks a lot.

There is one issue with projectors (I don't think it's my local mess - tried everything and it persists): When opening your scene in Studio, most objects' projectors have weird settings. This does not affect the rendering. However it is relevant for the test objects' projectors. When trying to edit or delete them, Studio crashes sometimes.

For Material (Main) there are two projectors (in the 06-29 version of your scene), both called "projector 0":

Material (Main) projector 0
Projection type: Flat
Position: -0.0014; 0.0508; -0.7084
Orientation: 45; -200; -15
Plane-U scale: -0.0000
Plane-V scale: 0.0000
Channel ID: 0

Material (Main) projector 0
Projection type: [nothing]
Position: -77657971028; -0.0000; 0.0000
Orientation: 0; 0; 0
Plane-U scale: 971186034211
Plane-V scale: 0.0000
Channel ID: 164934732

Material (Ring) has one projector with zero scale and gigantic Channel ID.. these are weird throughout the scene..

Here are some settings.
http://img236.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tatestprojkx6.jpg

Do you have an idea what is going on? This is the case with the updated 06-29 version of your scene. 06-31 has only one Material (Main) projector. Scale and ID oddness persist.

Sebastian,

Thanks for bringing this up. Yes it is indeed wierd as you discribe ...
The thing is that I can't see it from my system, so I am not sure what is up. (plus you are on OSX, which add to the complication)

I downloaded the 06-31 scene from the link above (to make sure I run the same exact file as you guys do) ... and these are the projectors I get in studio:
Main Object Projector 0
Image

Main Object Projector 1
Image

Ring projector
Image

The above settings are the correct ones.

Thomas,

thanks for your reply.

I will correct the settings manually. I tried again on a different machine, different cpu (G4), fresh download, different decomp utility - just to get the exact same off values. Strange. Some MXST/OSX issue? May I ask some Macxwell pro to reproduce this or confirm that I have my own private bugs here?

Thank you

Hmm.

No matter what I do, the .MXI background refuses to show up.

I've manually added it to all channels, I've saved, I've reloaded, I've turned on and off visibility for the background channel. It just never renders in the default material reflection.

(With the 6-31 version)

Despite that, I'm not sure if I've said it before, but thank you for making this Thomas. It's already clearly indispensible!

Zak,

Are you on OSx as well ?
Again, I am not sure why it does that (haven't experienced this here yet)

In any case. You can download the scene again ... and I have added back the actual walls of the box. Go to the objects list. Expand the group named "Environment" and unhide all the walls. The render should now be perfect as per original design (the only thing is you loose the speed benefit of the MXI trick).
