Yes, I do realize that 365 tips in one year are alot, but then again I imagine that Tom could deliver that by himself (if he had the time and inclination)... just think of how cool it would be if we had a forum full of Tom's posting even more inspiring works and discovering hidden nuggets.
You guys do really great stuff already. :) I will contribute as much as I can...

I thought this, too. Was a bit scared to be the first to post a response in that thread. :p It'd be quite cool if the general discussion/thank yous/sign ups were kept in here, though. I only say this because as more tips come in, I can see differing opinions and thoughts, conflicts, cross quoting, etc happening over time. Not nessessarily a bad thing, but not great for thread consistancy.

Having said that, great work on the thread so far everyone! Some great tips already.

I'm actually interested in seeing old tips show up in that thread as well -- I think of it as a repository for MXM knowledge (old and new)... I was hoping for people to get involved and post their MXM findings, observations, and work-arounds all in one place for a comprehensive resource for the community. From my POV anything that falls outside the scope of the Maxwell manual is fair game for that thread.

If this is the case, perhaps the version of Maxwell the tip was created in should be put somewhere in the text/title, so in the future people with Maxwell v4 or whatever won't be trying a v2 tip that potentially doesn't work or have the same results.

I was thinking simply start a new tips thread for each new major version -- since they will more than likely include changes to the materials system... and since they seem to change the forum for each new major version it would be logical.

Alot of things from V 1.* are still valid and relevant today -- those would be the things worth seeing again.(especially for newer users who didn't see it the first time)

I don't envision this as a endless thread just a resource for today -- I'll let tommorow take care of itself.

Best,
Jason.

Good tip Brodie -- I was wondering the reasons for the thinSSS setup in the plugins and now I know :D

Best,
Jason.

Another Good tip Brodie (actually several tips in there), and I really dig the preview scene too -- did you get that somewhere or make it?

Best,
Jason.

Thanks. Sorry for the ugly noise in those previews - I was using my old single core machine.

I made that preview in Studio. It's one of the standard sphere previews (I can't remember what it's called by default - I've changed many of my preview names) with the sphere lowered into the ground plane a bit and then I imported a plane and rotated it into place. As I recall I also changed the texture scale on the plane and may have adjusted the camera slightly.

I'm a big fan of having a lot of preview scenes. I find that I can often get a material to look right in one instance but then it doesn't look right in another (when you see it scaled differently, or it's up close, or far away, or the lighting is different, etc.). I tend to test out my materials in several different scenes and my favorite scene changes monthly (right now it's a variation of the floor preview). In the future I'll do a tip of the day on preview scenes.

Sounds cool -- I do much the same with my previews and I give many of them away with my tutorials for the same reason.

Best,
Jason.

I was not sure this tip is a really one, but it's so useful to me that it will probably be also for someone else.

I'll take tip of the day #11 -- this will be about backlit graphics.

Best,
Jason.

Thank-you :D I think you may be right though -- we seem to be the only 4 people on the forum
