And the 990X is out. My 980X is obsolete! :(

Heh, you're lucky polynurb. I'm still rendering with my stinky old q6600 2,4ghz machine. It's defintely not fast.

We have a couple of qx6700 computers at the office that I include in the render farm. They are the slowest ones in the office. Thanks, I do feel better now.

I made a list of parts on newegg for a cheap, basic, rendernode using this chip. Using the 970 chip, I built a set of 3 rendernodes for $3,500 total. The price includes render node licenses, windows upgrade and case. Crazy good pricing, if you ask me. Components were obviously pretty cheap, but for about $500 more total, you could get good name budget parts.

Hey Justin,

Was wondering how much time you trimmed off of your rendertime by investing in the renderfarm? Curious.

maxwell is scaling nearly linear compared to the number of cores of the same cpu type. here are some benchwell scores:

quad core i7 930 @ 4GHz ~7:30min BM ~1400

hexa core i7 980x @ 4,2GHz ~4:44min BM ~2250
(i don't have a 4GHz score)

so you can sum up the cores...

I haven't gotten around to doing it yet. once sandybridge came out, I started to look into that because they have been getting such good reviews...in some instances running close to the speed of the 980x if overclocked. I'm guessing with rendering that won't be the case since maxwell likes cores alot. My buddy just got a sandybridge system, so i'm going to have him do some testing for me and see where the best value is.

In pricing out the sandybridge, if you buy in sets of 3 with the top processor (i think it's the 2700k...maybe 2600, i forget right now) I was able to get it down to $2000 total. that includes windows and maxwell licenses also. So for now, i'm holding off till i have time to do more research.

But yeah, numerbois is right about the time and cores and whatnot. If I pull the trigger on something I'll make sure to post my results and system specs. Since i'm trying to keep the price as low as I can, i'm sure that will interest quite a few people around here.

Recently, I built a 2600K system and benchwell score is 4m50s without OC  8)

-CORRECTION: Disregard the above rendertime, didn't know my nightly build had a consistency problem with the rendertime due to a bug. I've also had hard times digesting this score. Of course, I repeated the test with the release 2.5.1.0 executable and it's 8m02s @ B1326,94. Well, still not bad for 330 usd. :P
