Hi there,

iam trying to use the maxwell proxy and tested it for the first time.

Attached the image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I made a teapot, converto to maxwell proxy, the proxy is visible.
when i go to compound objects, scatter, i got a cube, i tried everything but i get no teapots scattered.
Can someone help me?

You shouldn't see a box.... I guess you right-clicked the maxwell proxy object and you turned it to editable mesh...
No, you just make instances of the pointcloud... If you want to see it more clearly, then use the Display LOD %

Thanks, but is it not possible to scatter the pointcloud?

I see.... Yes, using scatter transforms the proxy to a box...

The solution is to use Crowd... A much better command which has a scatter option...
An example...

It's correct that proxies don't work with scatter or particle source scattering method, but it does work with the Object Paint in the Graphite tools. And it's awesome. :)

Sorry for the long delay, but somehow I missed this thread. We will have a look at this scatter-proxy issue.

Scatter doesn't actually create instances, but one giant new mesh. At least it was like this last time I used it a few years ago.

i use a free scatter plugin too and it works nice but somehow scatters on the same spots so lacks of a good seed feature.
I will try the object painter today. all in all its a bit tricky. I have to do large maize and corn fields so paonting will take maybe a bit to long.

i wasnt aware of the proxy issues before. thanks for the hints.

Ah thanks. It's nice and fast. Too bad there is no possibility to change the size of the brush or a auto-scatter option. But I will keep it for tree lines and other paint jobs. :)

As Bubbaloo said, the scatter modifier created a giant mesh out of all proxies which is retarded since Max has problems displaying huge geometry in viewport. That's why we made the Maxwell Proxy in the first place, to enhance viewport experience when having millions of polys to display. For this to work we had to bypass Max's mechanism of displaying geometry in viewport.

I understood that. But the question is how can I auto-scatter or auto-paint large amounts of proxies to populate my terrain?
Most tools like forest software or others are just for vray or mentalray.

I guess I have to use "Work 2.0". ;)

ForestPack is a great tool and with the last release you can make libraries of maxwell materials and objects... (It used to translate everything to a Forest material, not compatible with Maxwell)
I use it all the time, it can handle MW proxies with no problem.
It is not expensive. Of course you can use the lite version which is free to test it...

I tested it out and it seems to work for basic objects with the free version. Even made some fun. I had no chance to test high-poly trees because the Forest Tools Utility is not in the free version.

Are you running the latest beta with improved Maxwell support?

The guy here talks about some limits as coming to few thousands objects: http://www.itoosoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=766.0
You also stated in the thread that there are no problems. So you think grass proxies will run fine? I mean I have a large terrain with lots of grass and trees in it. :)
