I don't use hair for grass.... however, it is a matter of 3ds max knowledge... Maxwell just translates the hair-grass...
I suggest you read:
1. MAX's help file for hair-fur
2. Maxwell's new support site
http://support.nextlimit.com/display/ma ... r+and+Hair
and
http://support.nextlimit.com/display/knfaq/Fur+and+Hair

The way it is explained here may be more helpful: http://maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=37630

Here's an example of how to set it up for grass:

hey wagurto,

if you're interested, I've made a little grass/maxwell tutorial from stuff I've learned along the way. Since I render to maxwell from max, I thought this might be of some help here:

http://wanderplay.com/rusteberg/?p=1379

below are the methods I've tested.

Superb tutorial. Can't wait to try those hair/fur settings. That really clears up some things for me.

There's also Grass-o-matic plugin: http://www.maxplugins.de/max2012.php?search=&sort=Author

No instancing, but fast and nice.

Oh, yes. I forgot about that one! Thanks, Fernando!

I've been informed that export times have been addressed in the next max plugin update. So some of the settings shown in that last post may err on the side of caution.

Am I correct that for 3ds Max we don't have to worry about this Channel 0, Channel 1 business that's in the manual?

Max does not have zero channel. Starts at 1. Just + 1. You can setup your material for gradation in texture through mxed, but it can get cranky with max because of the +1 offset if you try to bring it back to work in max.

Instead, if your're using default max hair, use the built in root and tip texture boxes?

I thought it was well translated here: http://maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=37630 (Should be a sticky)
