One of my students got this emitter issue.
When I render his file on my system, everything looks just fine...
I remember seeing it before, but I don't recall how to solve the problem. Any suggestions?
He runs on 2.6.10 (Standalone).

It should look more like this:

A problem/workaround that existed before is not likely to apply now, and I don't guess that I can say much without taking a look at the model, assuming the issue is willing to present itself here.

Would I be correct to guess that your student is using the Standalone plugin, while you are using the Render Suite plugin? I am able to reproduce it using the Ruby exporter -- something (not sure what, yet) is being compared/detected differently there, resulting in more entities being exported as instances (and thereby running into a limitation in Maxwell related to emitters on scaled instances) than with the cpp exporter. One workaround would be to disable instances, and another would be to avoid the use of instances of components (you could use groups instead) that have emitters applied to faces.
